Which Antivirus Program Do You Use?

Thanks to Blinky's threat here: http://www.predpriemach.com/showthread.php?t=45214 , I am now starting a threat in which I am asking you which antivirus program do you use and why. Will be interesting to know why you use the program earned your vote in the poll and would you recommend it to the other webmasters.

As I wrote in the thread I use Avira. Before then I used ESET NOD32 Antivirus, but as you know is paid and this is not that I look for. I know that the paid one is better, but when you have a free solution and good as the paid one, guess which will I install.

And just one tip that most users (not webmasters) should know - do not install more than one antivirus programs. It will make your PC slower and in some cases will fight each other. See it before, and never do it again. Will wait for your votes here.

Here are the softwares: AhnLab, avast!, AVG, AVIRA ,BitDefender, BullGuard, eScan, ESET, Fortinet, F-Secure, G DATA, GFI ,Kaspersky, McAfee, Microsoft, Panda, PC Tools, Sophos, Trend Micro, Webroot - like in the Blinky's threat, that are taken from AV-Comparatives list.

I will give my vote for AVIRA, ESET, AVG and Microsoft? The last two I choose, because AVG I think is not so bad and Microsoft - well their antivirus is great. Have see how it works. Even more - when someone buys laptop, I suggest him to get and legal Windows (most of the times it is free - in the total price of the laptop) and to forget about other antivirus programs out there. But my leaders are Avira, I used mostly before getting on Linux and ESET.

Before that? You were with Windows in the past. Or? What did you use then? I am also with Linux now and have no problem at all. Will never go back to Windows.

Before that when i was on Windows i didn't use AV systems at all. I can clean almost all viruses with bare hands, but this is time consuming operation. If Windows is proper setup and use there is no need for AV. This mean don't use everything from the internet, get only things from trusted sources, use limited accounts, etc.

I don't use any Antivirus since about 3 years now. Before that I used Nod32 on WinXP.
I do regular check ups, like once a month or two, with Malwarebytes' anti-mallware, a-squared Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Kasperksy Anti-Virus (KAV). I used to also run regular check ups with Advanced SystemCare but they screw up more now than they actually fix.
For those 3 years I had to resolve only 3times max. to booting up a live cd (either ubuntu or Hiren's Boot cd) to manually clean a file.

On Windows 7 just by having enabled firewall and UAC settings set to max. and as long as you don't execute anything suspicious you are pretty much fine.
Also, when in doubt of a file's trustworthy - http://www.virustotal.com/

Another reason why I don't use AVs is 'cus they slow down my hell machine a lot, specially during games with a lot of files being used by the game.exe the AV is decreasing the FPS significantly. Not to mention that the constant read/write operations decrease the total life time span of the poor hdd (disregard this to a curtain level if you use an ssd. oh and donate me one).

Also, paid software? *cough* Torrents *cough* (ye I know, they don't protect that good and some even have viruses and it's illegal at some places).

I've just voted for Microsoft Security Essentials and I agree with @Brum, it is really light and does not bother me with useless alerts or messages. Also, I've used Avast, AVG and Avira, but I'm not really satisfied with their latest versions and the amount or resources they take.

I have installed Avira. My friend complains that the program shows him from time to time pop up window in the right side of the display asking him to buy the pro version. So, I will agree that the latest versions are not what I used in the past and will not go back to them for sure. Not to tell how many unwanted browser toolbars you have to remove. All come with the installation.

Yeah, I've noticed that with the free versions of the popular antivirus solutions. For example, AVG will install a security toolbar in your web browser to "protect" you in real time and to show some warnings if the website you try to visit is not secured enough. However, there are some incompatibilities with some versions of Google Chrome (I've tested it with Mozilla as well, but I did not notice the problem) and this may lead to allocation of all CPU... It took me 2 days to find the exact reason for that.

Well. I think that companies like MIcrosoft will create something really good and offer it to the market. I am not sure about the others, mostly about Panda, G DATA.

@mobilio, I have a friend, who do not want to install any antivirus, because he do not believe them, and every month I am visiting him to clear his PC. But he is far away from your knowledge and that's the reason I meet him so often.

In other words, people without AntiVirus should be really careful what they opening, installing, visiting on the web and downloading.

How can you not include Norton? I use Norton Internet Security and I like it very much. The price is very good too, only 39 BGN a year and it is even for 3 pcs. It is made really professional and easy to use. It also is one of the best in finding viruses according to some reviews.

Sorry, just forgot. Now is in the list. By the way Yahoo use Norton in its mail service - scanning the files and mails. The program is good, but I have never used it. The thing I know about this AV program is that it takes to much resources. More than the others, without Panda and Kaspersky - the heaviest I know in this industry.

I see it on most desktops. Have used it just once, but for few months. I also have positive impression from Avast. And as I see it on AV-Comparatives, it has good position since it is in their list and reports.

I am using Microsoft Essentials for about 2 years with no problems.

Every time I run M$ Essentials for more than a few days my computer gets a bit slower to a degree that you can notice. Yes i've excluded the ME process from being scanned as well as the folders with games/big problems, same problem. All known/unknown optimizations and et. as well.
The problem gets even worse if I use a Torrent client. After a few hours I can't listen to music normally, I hear metallic/electronic glitches, stuttering and music skips.
Also its a bit of a memory monster, maybe for most people who restart once a week it's fine but I restart my PC once every ~30-35days, and even with auto-ram freeing it's still a heavy peace of software. (still looking for people to donate me an SSD. 7200rpm HDD is so slow.. it's 2013 ;[ )
Doh M$ i known to create huge bottleneck software...

PS: it's not an unique problem, I saw it's a present issue in many other machines.

Same here. More than 4 years with Linux and no viruses found. Before that there are 5 best programs that people used - Kaspersky, Norton, ESET, AVG and McAfee. Avira was taking it position then, and Microsoft hasn't got any plan to provide antivirus with the OS Windows. Well, time changed.
